Have you experience receiving gifts, chocolates and flowers during the Hearts Day???
Valentine's Day is celebrated every 14th of February. It's a day to express love and affection for loved ones, family, and friends. People often exchange gifts, cards, flowers, and chocolates. It's also a popular day for romantic dinners and dates.
But who is this saint and where this celebration come from??
The history of Valentine's Day—and the story of its patron saint—is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome.
Christian origins
- The holiday may have originated from a Christian feast day to honor a martyr named Valentine
- The Catholic Church may have established the holiday to honor two Valentines who were executed by the Roman emperor Claudius II in the 3rd century
- One legend says that St. Valentine wrote the first "valentine" greeting to a young girl he fell in love with while in prison
Hearts
- The heart shape is thought to symbolize the heart's chambers, or the heart's appearance in an echocardiogram. It may also resemble the shape of a bird or reptile heart.
- In Europe, lovers give each other Saint Valentine's Keys as a romantic symbol, inviting the recipient to unlock the giver's heart.
Cupid
- The winged infant male Cupid is a symbol of love and affection between romantic partners.
Valentines
- The term "valentine" refers to a formal message or greeting card.
